Heidelberg has the distinction of having both the oldest and the most modern funicular railways in Germany. The lower portion opened in 1890, and was recently updated, giving it the most modern title. The upper portion, which opened in 1907, was renovated at the same time, but it kept its original features. It was placed on the regional register of monuments in 2004.

There are three stops on the rail – the Schloss, the Molkenkur, which is a restaurant and guesthouse, and the Königstuhl, where one will find the Falconry, the fairy tale children’s park, Märchen Paradies, the Berghotel und Restaurant Königstuhl, and the State Observatory and Television Tower.
