Built between 1712 and 1718, the Old University is now home to the Old Assembly Hall (Alte Aula), and the University Museum (Universitätsmuseum). The museum details the history of the University from its foundation in 1386 up through today’s current happenings. The square in front of the building, which was built over a monastery destroyed in 1693, is home to the well-known “Löwenbrunnen”, or Lion’s Fountain. The lion was the symbol of the Palatinate, and this fountain represents their power.
