The Museum of Ancient Art, part of the University of Heidelberg, is the largest archaeological collection in a German University. The collection contains two areas – the antique museum and the plaster cast reproduction collection.
The antique museum stems from the 1835 donation of Georg Friedrich Creuzer’s archaeological collection to the University, and offers the visitor an overview of the culture of the Mediterranean area from 3000 B.C. up to the Roman Empire. It includes a reconstruction of Heinrich Schliemann’s Troy and Mycenae finds, as well as ceramics, terracotta pottery, coins, and small bronze work.
The reproduction collection is comprised of plaster reproductions of Greek and Roman statues and reliefs. The marble and bronze originals are located in some of the world’s major museums.
