The University and U.S. Army are not the only institutes found in Heidelberg which are known the world over. Several companies and research and development centers also call Heidelberg home, and have turned the city into a source for future-oriented business and technology.


A division of ABB Group, ABB Stortz-Kontakt is a global manufacturer of low-voltage electrical systems for buildings, machinery automation and energy distribution. Some of the products include circuit-breakers, security systems, sensors, overload relays, miniature and installation contactors and complete system programs for electrical building installation.


HeidelbergCement, founded in 1873 as a small cement factory, now boasts offices and factories in over 50 countries. It is an international leader in the manufacturing of building materials, with its main products being cement, ready-mixed concrete, aggregates and other related products.

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG

Founded in 1850, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG is one of the world’s top commercial and industrial suppliers in the print media industry. Products include sheetfed and flexographic printing presses as well as imaging devices, finishing equipment, manufacturing process integration software and consumables. Currently, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen has approximately 250 sales offices around the world as well as development and production plants in six countries.


Lamy was founded in 1930, and is still independently owned and operated. The first LAMY fountain pen was released in 1952, and today the company produces over 6 million writing instruments annually. Lamy is known for its unique design, which was established in 1966 with the advent of the LAMY 2000.

LION bioscience AG

The market leader for data integration in bioinformatics, LION Bioscience AG, is focused on enabling researchers easier and quicker access to data used in the research for drugs, pesticides, and compounds used in the food industry, as well as integrating analyzed information from different steps in the R&D process with each other.


MLP Finanzdienstleistungen AG, Heidelberg, is a sales subsidiary of MLP Group, and is an independent financial advisor. Concentrating primarily on the academic world, they consult both individuals and businesses on pensions, insurance and insurance cover, investments and loans and mortgages.


With its products being used by more than 12 million people in over 120 countries, SAP AG is the largest business software company in the world. It is also the third largest software company worldwide, after Microsoft and IBM. SAP AG was founded in 1972 and is based in Walldorf, which is just 15 kilometers south of Heidelberg. SAP AG has developed its business solution software to be compatible with not only large companies, but medium and small-sized businesses as well.

SAS Institute

Founded in 1976, SAS is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. SAS’s mission is to “to empower organizations around the world with superior software, solutions and services”, and they accomplish this with software developed for data integration, storage, analytics and applications. With 10,000 employees in more than 400 offices worldwide, SAS is a global leader in business intelligence software.

Springer Science+Business Media

One of the world’s leading publishing companies, Springer Science+Business Media specializes in the fields of science, technology and medicine. They publish not only books and academic journals, but also newsletters, CD-ROMs and databases, as well as providing online services, seminars and conferences.
